Marquez began his professional career in 1996 with Atlas in Mexico, quickly earning recognition for his defensive skills. In 1999, he moved to AS Monaco, where he won the Ligue 1 and Coupe de la Ligue titles, establishing himself as a world-class defender. His exceptional performances led to a historic transfer in 2003, making him the first Mexican to play for FC Barcelona.
During his seven seasons with Barcelona, Marquez became a key figure in the team’s golden era, winning four La Liga titles and two UEFA Champions League trophies. His versatility allowed him to excel as both a center-back and defensive midfielder, adapting seamlessly to different tactical roles.
After leaving Europe, he joined the New York Red Bulls in the MLS before returning to Mexico, where he captained León to back-to-back Liga MX titles. He later had a brief stint with Hellas Verona in Italy before retiring at Atlas, the club where his journey began.
