While serving as Netflix’s Chief Talent Officer, Patty McCord spent more than a dozen years exploring different ways to work. Her efforts culminated in the Netflix Culture Deck, which has been viewed nearly 20 million times since 2009. In it, McCord and Netflix CEO Reed Hastings emphasize hiring well, trusting the people you hire, and removing bureaucratic obstacles. Sheryl Sandberg described the Netflix Culture Deck as “the most important document ever to come out of Silicon Valley.”
Before helping Netflix through its IPO, McCord helped Pure Atria Software do the same. She also worked for industry giants Sun Microsystems, Seagate Technologies, and Borland, while advising start-ups on their internal cultures.
McCord continues to advise companies large and small, and to share her wisdom through presentations and publications. Her book Powerful: Building a Culture of Freedom and Responsibility was one of the Washington Post’s 11 Leadership Books to Read in 2018.
