Otmar Issing biography
Finance speaker Otmar Issing is one of the fathers of the Euro, and one of Europe’s most important economists. In his role as a keynote speaker, Otmar Issing brings a lifetime of accomplishment to the world’s core economic issues.
Serving on the European Central Bank’s first Executive Board, Otmar Issing oversaw the birth of the Eurozone. During his six-year tenure, the longest of any inaugural board member, Issing was responsible for the ECB’s General Economics and Research directorates. He then headed Angela Merkel’s Advisory Council on a New Financial Order and advised the European Commission on economic matters.
Prior to his work with the ECB, Issing was a member of the Deutsche Bundesbank’s board. He also sat in the Central Bank Council. His academic career includes chairs in the economics departments of Würzberg and Erlangen-Nürnberg Universities. He now sits on the faculties of Goethe University Frankfurt and the University of Würzburg.
Issing’s contributions have earned him recognition throughout Europe. His awards include the University of Pavia’s Laurea Honoris Causa and appointment as Grand Officier de l`Ordre de Mérite du Grand-Duché de Luxembourg. Perhaps the most decorated economist in his native Germany, Issing earned the Federal Cross of Merit for his lifetime’s service.
His textbooks have informed the study of monetary policy for decades. Einführung in die Geldtheorie (Introduction to Monetary Theory) has proven itself through 15 editions, and Einführung in die Geldpolitik (Introduction to Monetary Policy) through six. His detailed study of the Euro, Der Euro – Geburt, Erfolg, Zukunft (The Birth of the Euro) appeared in 2008 and was soon translated into Chinese.
