Kip Thorne is the Feynman Professor of Theoretical Physics, Emeritus, at the California Institute of Technology. For more than 40 years, he led a research group that studied relativistic astrophysics and gravitational physics.
With Rainer Weiss and Ronald Drever, he founded the Laster Interferometer Gravitational Wave Observatory. In 2015, LIGO recorded gravitational waves caused by black holes 1.4 billion light years away. This discovery, and the remarkable career that preceded it, earned Thorne a share of the 2020 Nobel Prize in Physics.
Thorne co-wrote the popular textbooks Gravitation and Modern Classical Physics. His work on wormholes inspired 1994’s bestselling Black Holes and Time Warps: Einstein’s Outrageous Legacy. After co-writing a movie treatment, Thorne became an executive producer on the Christopher Nolan film Interstellar, and its science advisor. The Science of Interstellar explores both Thorne’s role in the film’s production and the astonishing science behind the movie.
Additionally, Thorne has earned Fulbright, Guggenheim, and Woodrow Wilson fellowships. Along with his Nobel honors, he has also won the Albert Einstein Medal, the Shaw, Kavli, and Tomalla Prizes, and the Princess of Asturias Award.
