Economics speaker Joseph Stiglitz is a Nobel Award-winning economist whose work examines globalization, inequality, and public policy. Named by Time as one of the 100 most influential people in the world, he is also a bestselling author. As a speaker, Joseph Stiglitz draws on an extraordinary history of work at the deepest levels of the global economy.
A PRIZE-WINNING ACADEMIC CAREER
In 1979, Stiglitz won the prestigious John Bates Clark Award, given to the field’s most influential economist under 40. His work on the economics of information earned Stiglitz the 2001 Nobel Prize in economics.
Since beginning his career as a professor at Yale in 1970, Stiglitz has taught at Princeton, Stanford, and MIT. He was also the Drummond Professor and a Fellow at All Souls College, Oxford. Presently, he is a University Professor at Columbia, where he founded and continues to lead the school’s Initiative for Policy Dialogue.
A LEGACY OF PUBLIC SERVICE
He served on the Council of Economic Advisers from 1993 to 1995, becoming CEA Chairman from 1995 to 1997. The World Bank then named him its Chief Economist, a position he held through 2000.
In response to the global financial crisis of 2008, the UN General Assembly appointed Stiglitz to chair a commission on international financial reform. This commission issued an influential report in 2009, published in book form as The Stiglitz Report. His work with the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change earned him a share of the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize.
He has earned recognition from governments around the world, and is an Officer in France’s Legion of Honor.
