Dr. Trompenaars says that culture has many layers, like an onion. On the outside, we find the expressions, the products of culture. Things like the architecture we build, the food we eat, the language we speak or the way we behave. But Fons argues that we need to be careful as these outside expressions can have different interpretations. In this fascinating speech, Fons will talk about the 7 dimensions of culture.Cultures can be universalistic or particularistic; individualistic or collectivistic; neutral or affective; specific vs diffuse; achievement-oriented vs ascribe ones. Time is the 6th dimension and it also affects culture (short-time oriented vs long-time oriented; past, presented or future oriented cultures). Finally, our relationship with nature also determines if we are a culture that tries to control it, or if we think nature controls us. Besides explaining the differences, Fons will talk about how cultures can reconcile their differences and how multi-cultural teams can work effectively and use the best of each culture to succeed.
