    Keynote speaker Anne Applebaum is a Pulitzer-prize-winning historian and a writer for The Atlantic. Furthermore, she holds the position of Senior Fellow at the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies. Her other roles include Senior Fellow at the Agora Institute, where she is the co-director of Arena, a program focused on misinformation and 21st-century propaganda.

    Anne Applebaum has had a long and successful career as a journalist. For the first fifteen years of his career, she worked for the Washington Post. She then went to London to work as Foreign and Deputy Editor of the Spectator. Aside from that, she has served as a columnist for Slate and as Political Editor of the Evening Standard.  Furthermore, she documented the fall of communism as an Economist correspondent.

    Anne is the author of many best-selling books. Her debut work, Iron Curtain, earned the Cundill Historical Literature Prize in 2012. Moreover, the book was a finalist for the National Book Award and gained the Duke of Westminster Medal. Anne wrote Red Famine: Stalin’s War on Ukraine in 2017. An award-winning book was published a year later, in 2018, and it received both the Duff Cooper and the Lionel Gelber awards.

    She also wrote Gulag: A History. Gulag, like her earlier books, won a number of important prizes. One of these prizes was the 2004 Pulitzer Prize for non-fiction.

    Twilight of Democracy: The Seductive Lure of Authoritarianism is Anne Applebaum’s most recent book.  The book examines why some individuals have gone from having strong liberal democratic ideals to preferring nationalist movements, strongman cults, or one-party states.
