Speaker Anil Seth is a Professor of Cognitive and Computational Neuroscience at the University of Sussex. There, he also serves as Co-Director of the Sackler Centre for Consciousness Science. Additionally, he is Co-Director of the Canadian Institute for Advanced Research (CIFAR) Program on Brain, Mind, and Consciousness. And lastly, as the Leverhulme Doctoral Scholarship Programme: From Sensation and Perception to Awareness. Previously, Seth was an Engagement Fellow with the Wellcome Trust.
Seth is the Editor-in-Chief of Neuroscience of Consciousness. He sits on the Editorial Board of Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society B, as well as the Advisory Committee for 1907 Research and Chile’s Congreso Futuro. He has also served as Conference Chair for the 16th Meeting of the Association for the Scientific Study of Consciousness (ASSC16, 2012) and was an ASSC ‘member at large’ from 2014-2022.
The EPSRC (Leadership Fellowship) supports his research. Other institutions that support his research include the European Research Council (ERC, Advanced Investigator Grant), the Wellcome Trust, and the Canadian Institute for Advanced Research (CIFAR). Seth’s work has been featured in The Observer, The New Statesman, and Quanta.
Seth’s book, Being You: A New Science of Consciousness, is a bestseller and has received numerous accolades. Above all, it was The Economist Book of the Year, Bloomberg Business Book of the Year, a Guardian Book of the Week, and a Guardian and Financial Times Science Book of the Year. His 2017 main-stage TED talk has received over 13 million views and is one of TED’s most popular science talks. Seth has also edited and co-authored the best-selling 30 Second Brain (Ivy Press, 2014). He also maintains a blog called NeuroBanter.
Various international media outlets often feature Seth. He has been recognized as a Clarivate Highly Cited Researcher (2019, 2020, 2021, 2022). It recognizes the top 0.1% of scientists and social scientists in the world based on the impact of their publications. Lastly, Seth won the 2019 KidSpirit Perspective prize and served as the 2017 President of the British Science Association (Psychology Section).
In this talk, Anil Seth examines the question of who we really are and proposes a new theory of consciousness and self centered on the idea that we "predict" the world into existence. He discusses how our brains construct our sense of self through our experiences, perceptions, and interactions with the world, and how this construction can influence our behaviors, relationships, and sense of identity. Through engaging anecdotes and cutting-edge research, Seth offers a captivating look into the inner workings of the human brain and the mysteries of self-awareness, covering topics such as sleep, memory, and the nature of reality. He invites the audience to consider the reality we experience in our brains versus the world as it objectively might be.
In this presentation, Anil Seth offers a unique look into the latest research in the field of consciousness science. He distinguishes between different aspects of consciousness, including conscious level, conscious content, and conscious self, and discusses how current experiments are illuminating the neural mechanisms underlying these phenomena. He also explores how these mechanisms may be disrupted in neurological and psychiatric conditions. Through his expertise and engaging style, Seth provides a fascinating perspective on this cutting-edge field.
Anil Seth is a leading neuroscientist who has dedicated his career to understanding the mechanisms behind conscious experience. In this talk, he presents the latest research on how billions of neurons in the brain work together to create our subjective experiences of the world and ourselves. He suggests that we are constantly hallucinating and that when we share these hallucinations, we consider them to be "reality." By challenging our assumptions about the nature of consciousness and reality, Seth offers a thought-provoking and disorienting perspective that is sure to leave a lasting impression on his audiences.
In this talk, Anil Seth delves into the question of what gives rise to the experience of being a conscious self – of being you. He combines insights from cognitive neuroscience with concepts from psychology and control theory to explain how our conscious selves emerge from our fundamental biological drive to survive in an unpredictable world. Through engaging anecdotes and cutting-edge research, Seth offers a unique perspective on the nature of consciousness and the self, and invites his audiences to consider the ways in which our brains construct our sense of self and reality.
