    In the late 1960s, Alan Sugar used his life’s savings to buy a van, from which he sold consumer electronics. His company, Amstrad, soon ventured into manufacturing and then into the new personal-computer market. The flagship Amstrad CPC 464 appeared in 1984, followed by a series of powerful, affordable home computers.

    Sugar sold Amstrad to BskyB in 2007 for a reported £125 million, and turned to the property market with Amsprop. He also founded charter-jet business Amsair in 1993 and is chairman of Amscreen, a digital signage company. From 1991 to 2007, Sugar was the majority owner of Tottenham Hotspur F.C.

    For his service to the economy, Sugar was knighted in 2000 and appointed to the House of Lords in 2009. In 2005, he filmed his first series of the BBC’s BAFTA-winning “The Apprentice.” His long-running turn on the show cemented Sugar’s reputation as one of the UK’s most notable and quotable entrepreneurs.
